Important

  • [1] See “Settings and Specifications” for printing tips and how to achieve the best two-color effect
  • [2] Silk PLA may not be completely resistant to heat creep, so this filament does not have Jam-Free™ technology. This may affect compatibility with some printers. If necessary, it is recommended to use PLA with Jam-Free™ or change the hotend configuration

Print settings

Nozzle temperature: 190-230°C
Bed temperature: 25-60°C

Surface preparation: not usually necessary. For some surfaces, Magigoo or PVA glue (glue stick) can be used.
Cooling fan: ON
Print speed: 40-60 mm/s
Support material:
Single Extrusion: Self Support
Dual Extrusion: PolyDissolve™ S1 or PolySupport™

Tips for printing with dichromatic filament

  1. Two-color filaments print best when the outer contours (perimeters) of the pattern are printed in the same direction for each layer. Not all slicers do this by default. You can check the direction in preview mode.
  2. PolyLite Dual Silk PLA is rolled carefully to ensure proper color alignment. For best results, make sure the filament does not twist during feeding. When twisted, the position of the two colors may shift, resulting in a “striped” effect. This is normal to some extent, but may be more pronounced on certain printers (depending on the spool, hotend and extruder). Using a quality direct drive extruder and positioning the spool correctly can reduce this effect.
  3. Smaller melting zones are more suitable for two-colour filaments. This is due to the laminar flow in 3D printing where the colors do not mix. Volcano type hotend or CHT nozzles can cause mixing and reduce the visual two-color effect.
  4. It is useful to print a test pattern (alignment coin) to determine exactly where the colour shift will occur. The angle will vary according to the settings, but if the printer and spool are in the same position, the result will be consistent between different spools.

Tips for printing with Silk PLA

  1. It is not recommended to use Silk PLA with printers that have heat creep problems.
  2. Under normal conditions Silk PLA should provide a glossy finish. However, at high printing speeds, the material may not melt properly, resulting in a dull or uneven surface. For better results:
    • use lower speed for outer contours (perimeters)
    • limit the volume flow to about 8 mm³/s
    • try a slightly higher nozzle temperature

Specification

Compatibility

PolyLite™ PLA Silk was developed with compatibility in mind and works perfectly with a wide range of 3D printers. Although standard PolyLite™ PLA uses Jam-Free™ technology, it cannot be applied to silk filaments such as PolyLite™ PLA Dual Silk.

Due to the wide variety of 3D printers on the market, full compatibility with every model cannot be guaranteed. Experience with the slicer and settings is key to achieving optimal results. It is recommended to make test prints and calibrations before starting more complex projects.

If your printer is experiencing heat creep and difficulty printing with PLA or Silk PLA (extruder clogging), PolyLite™ PLA Dual Silk may increase the risk of clogging.

Storage and drying

All plastics are hygroscopic, which means they absorb moisture from the air. This can affect print quality and part strength. The rate of absorption depends on the material and the environment. PolyLite™ Dual Silk PLA filaments are dried and packaged in a vacuum bag with a moisture absorber to ensure optimum quality. When not in use, they should be stored away from sunlight and in a tightly closed package.

While filaments can be dried, this accelerates the aging of the material and can make it more brittle over time. The best approach is to prevent moisture absorption. For long-term storage, the use of a sealed container with a moisture absorber that maintains a humidity of 10-20% RH is recommended.

In manufacturing, PolyLite™ uses systems such as PolyDryer™ that provide reliable moisture protection through a high quality seal.

If popping sounds are heard during printing or uneven surface and color changes are observed, this is a sign of moisture in the filament. In this case, the filament can be dried with PolyDryer™ (level 1) or in a convection oven at 55°C for up to 6 hours. The results depend on the accuracy of the instrument, so be careful. See the drying guide for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Does PolyLite™ PLA Dual Silk have Jam-Free™ technology?
A: To achieve the silk effect, this filament does not use the Jam-Free™ technology that is applied to standard PolyLite™ PLA.

Q: Does Silk PLA print the same way as standard PLA?
A: Silk PLA is a blend of PLA and other materials that provides a glossy finish. The settings and printer affect the end result, but in general the settings are similar to standard PLA.

Q: Can PLA be printed in large scale without deformation?
A: PLA has good dimensional stability and allows printing of large parts. However, poor first bonding or excessively high bed temperature can lead to deformations.

Q: What support material should I use?
A: PolyDissolve™ S1 or PolySupport™ are recommended. If the printer does not support multi-material, self-support can be used.

Q: Can I rewind the filament on another reel?
A: Not recommended. The filaments are wound under controlled tension, and overwinding may cause failure. Use adapters or external spool holders as needed.

Applications

PolyLite™ Dual Silk PLA combines the luxurious look of silk with the vibrant two-tone effect of dichromatic PLA. Whether you are a professional designer, hobby enthusiast or artist, this filament gives 3D prints a premium and impressive finish.

Two-tone filaments are widely used for a variety of home or small business projects, including:

  • Figures
  • Toys
  • Decorative patterns and vases
  • Personalised trophies and medals
  • Brilliant gifts for family and friends
  • Accent elements in prefabricated 3D models
  • Models with metallic effect
  • Cosplay elements with glossy finish
  • Models and architectural models

Compared to standard PolyLite™ PLA, Dual Silk PLA has slightly different mechanical properties and adhesion between layers. As with all PLA-based materials, high temperature resistance is limited, so it is not recommended for applications exposed to high temperatures.
