What is a high speed thread?

A material is considered “high-speed” if it meets the following 3 criteria at a certain printing temperature:

  1. Plasticity: It can be extruded continuously at a speed of 24 mm3/s on a popular extrusion system. (equivalent to 300 mm/s at 0.2 mm layer height with 0.4 mm nozzle)
  2. Moulding: At 24mm3/s it retains similar surface quality, overhang and bridge as when printing at lower speeds.
  3. Functionality: at 24mm3/s it retains at least 80% of its overall mechanical properties when printing at lower speeds. (mainly: layer adhesion, tensile strength and impact strength)

PolySonic PLA at 230˚C

  1. Maximum Flow*: 29mm3/s** (tested on a custom extruder rig equipped with E3D volcano chute, 0.4mm nozzle with Hemera XS extruder)
  2. Confirmed similar quality to Polymaker Scientist when printing at 4mm3/s and 24mm3/s
  3. Layer adhesion at 4mm3/s-24mm3/s: 37.3-32.3 MPa (87% maintenance)
    Tensile strength at 4mm3/s-24mm3/s: 46.0-43.9 (95% retained)
    Impact resistance at 4mm3/s-24mm3/s: 6.1-5 kJ/m2 (82% retained)

* Maximum Flow: Flow rate at which the measured flow rate falls below 95% of the requested flow rate.
* For 0.2 mm layer height with 0.4 mm nozzle: 29 mm 3/s -> 363 mm/s
* For 0.1 mm layer height with 0.4 mm nozzle: 29 mm 3/s -> 725 mm/s

What are the advantages of using a high speed thread?

  1. Surface quality at high speed:

    When printing at high speed, the nozzle will actually experience a wide variety of speeds, from 0 mm/s to the maximum speed set on the cutting tool. The higher the top speed, the wider the range of different speeds. The problem is that at the same print temperature, the extrusion temperature will vary dramatically, leaving a different print finish (from glossy to matte due to a phenomenon called: “shark skin”), high speed filaments reduce these differences by showing a similar surface finish over a wide range of flow rates.

    Additionally, high speed filament will extrude much more consistently within the speed range, providing a smooth surface, whereas regular filament will show holes, artifacts, and layers of varying thickness.

  2. Mechanical properties at high speed:

    High speed filament will exhibit much better overall mechanical properties when printed at higher speeds than regular filament due to the more consistent extrusion and optimized cooling/melting rate of the polymer.

  3. Higher productivity:

    Thanks to 1) and 2) you can produce from your 3D printer part with the same quality and at a much higher speed. This advantage is ideal for businesses that use 3D printing to manufacture their products.

Settings for printing and drying?

Printing temperature:

  • Classic: 190˚C – 230˚C
  • High speed: 210˚C – 230˚C

Print speed:

  • Classic: 50 mm/s – 100 mm/s
  • High speed: 100 mm/s – 300 mm/s
  • Bed temperature: 25˚C – 60˚C
  • Fan: on

Direct drive:

  • Retraction distance: 1 mm
  • Retraction speed: 20 mm/s
  • Direct drive:
  • Retraction distance: 3 mm
  • Retraction speed: 40 mm/s
  • Drying settings: 55˚C for 6 hours (Only if the material has absorbed moisture)
