History
Acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate copolymers are among the impact resistant terpolymers and have similar properties to ABS. They are also more weather resistant than other terpolymers. In 1967, the first free-swinging plastic chair was made by ASA.
Production
ASA is produced from the synthesis of n-butylacrylate. Various substances are then added to improve the properties. For example, cyclohexyl acrylate can be used as a comonomer to protect the plastic from low temperature environments.
3D printing
Due to its special resistance to weather and UV light, the material is very suitable for outdoor applications. Like ABS, the plastic is suitable for slightly advanced users as the material can be prone to deformation. This can be counteracted with an enclosed print space, heated print bed or print plate.
Technical data
The surface of the material is scratch resistant and glossy, transparent materials are also possible. By adding special additives or by various manufacturing methods, the surface can also be made matt. Due to the higher polarity of acrylic esters, ASA has a higher chemical resistance than ABS. In addition, the material is resistant to aqueous solutions such as acids and foams, as well as oils and fats, alcohols and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Unlike ABS, which is not UV-resistant due to the polybutadiene component, ASA can be used particularly well outdoors thanks to the acrylic esters.
Annex
The material is used in construction, for equipment subjected to heat stress, such as coffee machines, in sports or in cars. In 3D printing, the material is used for external parts. Due to its high resistance to weathering and ultraviolet rays, as well as high impact and shock resistance, the material can be used for a wide range of applications.
