Features

  • Affordable and easy to use – Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08 is a cost-effective recycled carbon filament reinforced with PETG that has been named “PLA of the Engineering Materials”. It inherits the overall performance of PETG by incorporating recycled carbon fibers for improved surface texture and enhanced mechanical properties.
  • Recycled carbon fibre – Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08 uses carbon fibre from end-of-life wind turbine blades, and this fibre is certified to the global recycled materials standard by TÜV Rheinland. The use of recycled carbon fibre provides a more sustainable origin for the composite filament while maintaining the mechanical strength that users expect from carbon fibre reinforcement.
  • Dimensional accuracy and moisture insensitivity – By providing fantastic dimensional accuracy, low moisture sensitivity and low shrinkage during printing, Fiberon PETG-rCF17 is suitable for rapid prototyping and a wide range of functional applications requiring durability, accuracy and surface finish.
  • High-speed printing capability – The Fiberon PETG-rCF08 is designed with printer compatibility in mind and is high-speed, allowing printing up to 300 mm/s on suitable high-speed printers.
  • Excellent surface finish – Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08 3D prints and renders parts with an attractive surface finish thanks to the excellent fluidity of PETG as a matrix material and 8% carbon fiber reinforcement.

  • Low moisture sensitivity does not describe whether the filament should be kept dry for optimum print quality. This description of moisture insensitivity is in the context of the end application, where extremely moisture sensitive materials such as PA6-CF experience a significant reduction in mechanical properties as the workpiece absorbs moisture. In PETG-CF, moisture absorption is minimal and does not affect the mechanical properties of the workpiece. For best printing results PETG-CF should still be kept dry during printing and storage.

Print speed: Up to 300 mm/s
Retraction: The ideal settings for retraction vary from printer to printer and depend on the host printer. The following settings are a good starting point for many machines.
Direct Drive: 3 mm retraction distance at 40 mm/s retraction speed
Bowden: 6 mm retraction distance at 60 mm/s retraction speed
Recommended support material: Self-sustaining.

The above printing recommendations are based on a 0.4 mm nozzle. Please note that ideal printing conditions may vary depending on your 3D printer settings. For high-speed 3D printers, make sure to use a suitable printer and raise the extrusion temperature to use higher print speeds.

Hardened nozzles, such as hardened steel, are less conductive than brass, so depending on your 3D printer you may need to print at a higher extrusion temperature when using a wear resistant nozzle.

We highly recommend using a wear-resistant nozzle when printing Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08. Hardened steel offers much better wear resistance than brass. The second consideration is to keep the PETG-rCF dry during printing and storage. See “Storage and Drying” details below for instructions on protecting Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08.

Specific printing tips for Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08.

  • Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08 is a very stiff filament due to its carbon fiber reinforcement. When not in use, please use duct tape to secure the filament tip to the spool instead of trying to bend the filament through the spool guide hole. During printing, it is necessary to have a smooth feed path to ensure optimal feeding. For example, we recommend avoiding excessive bending in the filament guide system.
  • Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08 can easily damage a brass nozzle after a few hundred grams of printing. Nozzles are available in many different materials, from soft to hard, and the thermal conductivity of the nozzle can change depending on what material it is made of. Hardened steel is more resistant to wear than brass or nickel plated nozzles.
  • Interlayer strength can depend significantly on extrusion temperature, which is a result of print speed, nozzle type and hot end. Higher nozzle temperature/extrusion temperature can offer significant advantages in terms of interlayer strength. When printing Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08 at low temperature (240˚C) on a common desktop 3D printer, it is recommended to use a nickel-plated hardened brass nozzle, which offers better thermal conductivity than hardened steel, or a high-flow hot end to provide better melt efficiency.

Compatibility

Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08 is designed to enable users to print robust carbon fiber filled parts on a wide range of 3D printers. Since the carbon fibers in this material are highly abrasive, we recommend that customers first verify that their 3D printer is equipped to print abrasive materials before purchasing this product.
Besides abrasion resistance, there are several important considerations for this material that we recommend.
Reinforced filaments are usually much stiffer than other standard filaments and this can cause problems when passing the filament through the printer’s feed system. For a steady and uninterrupted filament flow, it is recommended that you take extra care and ensure that your filament feed system is smooth and with minimal bends. Brass nozzles provide better thermal conductivity than hardened nozzles, such as stainless steel. Depending on your 3D printer, higher extrusion temperatures may be required when using special nozzles to ensure the correct extrusion temperature is achieved.
Of course, with thousands of unique 3D printer models on the market, we can’t guarantee that every filament type will work with every 3D printer. It always requires experience with cutting tools and adjusting settings to get the most out of a material. Before embarking on an ambitious project, we always recommend printing some known calibration tests to build or make adjustments to the filament profile.

Storage and drying

All plastics are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb moisture from the air, which can affect the print quality and strength of printed parts. How quickly this absorption occurs depends on the material and the environment. Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08 filaments are dried and packaged in a vacuum sealed bag with a desiccant to ensure the best print quality. When not in use, Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08 should be stored away from sunlight and sealed in the packaged resealable bag.

Although filaments can be dried, drying will accelerate the aging process of the plastic. Preventing moisture from being absorbed by the filament in the first place is the best solution to preserve the maximum potential of your filament. For long-term storage, we highly recommend storing in a sealed container with a desiccant dryer that reduces relative humidity to 10-20% RH.

At our facility, we manage our filaments with Polymakers’ PolyDryer™, which offers best-in-class sealing to protect filaments from absorbing moisture or other dryer lint.

If you hear popping sounds and notice that the surface quality of your print is uneven or the color is not consistent, this is a likely indicator that the filament has absorbed too much moisture. Fiberon™ PETG-rCF08 spools can be dried with Polymaker PolyDryer™ using power level 2 for 6 hours. Alternatively, if you have a convection oven that is accurate at low temperatures, users can dry the filament in a preheated convection oven at 65˚C for up to 3 hours. Results may vary depending on the accuracy of your oven, so please use caution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does PETG-rCF need to be annealed?

A: No, due to the amorphous nature of PETG, annealing PETG-r-CF is not necessary and will not provide additional thermal or mechanical properties. This is in contrast to PET-CF which is semi-crystalline and benefits from annealing.

Q: Do I need an inker to print PETG-rCF?

A: As a general rule, it is not necessary to have an inclogger, but it really depends on the room temperature, size, geometry and density of your parts. When printing without an enclosure, it is important to keep the printer away from cold drafts that can affect the print.

Q: Do I need to rewind this thread if I want to use it with another spool?

A: We strongly recommend not to tamper with the product by rewinding. All Polymaker filaments are wound with tension, but without strain. Rewinding completely rearranges the curvature of the coil and this tension over time can cause catastrophic breakage of most plastics. If for some reason your printer is blocked from mounting smaller than standard size spools, there may be safe print adapters or external mounting solutions available.
